Stephen S. Newland has been practicing law for nearly 30 years and is considered an authority by many in the fields of real estate, foreclosure defense, and estate planning.

Due to Steve's experience, he is often asked to speak to fellow attorneys at bar association seminars to instruct other lawyers on how to assist their clients. Steve has been a featured speaker at various bar association seminars on topics such as:

  • “Advising Clients in Foreclosure”
  • “What Every Real Estate Lawyer Need to Know About Bankruptcy”
  • “How to Obtain Loan Modifications Using a Foreclosure Defense”
  • “Affirmative Defense in Foreclosure”

In foreclosure defense cases, Steve has been successful in getting lenders to provide clients loan modifications where the lenders were previously unwilling to provide modifications. Steve has also succeeded in getting people back their homes even after the banks have taken the homes through foreclosure sales.

Due to Steve's success in defending foreclosures, he has one of the largest foreclosure defense practices in the Chicago area. His practice has been featured on the front page of the Northwest Herald.

Steve handles hundreds of real estate closings each year, has completed many thousands in his career, and with most of his clients being return clients or referred to him from other clients or people in the industry you can be assured you would be getting tremendous representation.

Steve was recently asked to serve on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Organization, which is the preeminent real estate organization for lawyers. Steve is also a former Co-chair of the Real Estate Committee of the Lake County Bar Association.

Steve obtained his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Steve then went on to receive his law degree from DePaul University in Chicago, excelling in law school as a recipient of the Dean's Scholarship Award for Academic Excellence. Steve was employed at one of the largest and most prestigious personal injury law firms in the nation, where he worked on multimillion-dollar, high-publicity cases such as the Tylenol poisonings and major aviation disasters. While working on high profile injury cases, Steve also provided legal representation to those unable to afford an attorney through the DePaul Legal Aid Clinic.

The firm of Newland & Newland, LLP was founded by Steve and his brother Gary, who have been law partners since 1993. The firm has grown to include eight lawyers and numerous paralegals and support staff. Gary’s half of the firm practices in personal injury and worker’s compensation.

Steve is available to meet with clients in any of the firm's office locations.
